Turnip Rapa d Orto Bianca Lodigiana

Turnip Rapa d Orto Bianca Lodigiana  Turnip, White from Lodi province, which is just south of Milan. A very pretty turnip with excellent taste.  This Italian heirloom produces smooth, white-skinned, flattened roots with crisp, white flesh.  Turnip roots are delicious baked or roasted. They can also be used in salads, soups, stir fries, etc.  Flatter than round, pure white skinned and fleshed roots. Turnip Rapa Bianca Lodigiana can be forced for early crops, or sown regularly for delicious "baby roots" for salads or stir frying. Use the tasty leaves as "greens".   Stores well. Turnips are a major vegetable in Northern Italy.  Maturity: approximately 50 days.

This has a more delicate texture and a more delicate flavor than almost any other variety. The young tender greens are fabulous as well. Pick these when golf ball sized or a little larger. Peel the roots and slice them thin and braise them in butter with a little maple syrup, and a few tablespoons of water till glazed. Delicious! Healthy and productive. In a year when all your other crops seem to be doing badly, growing turnips is great for one's self esteem.
