Thunbergia, Rampicante Gialla. Climbing

Thunbergia, Rampicante Gialla.  Perennial, rustic and tropical climbing plant growing to about 8 feet tall.  Easy to grow, produces an abundant amount of yellow flowers with black centers.  Loves sunny places and ample ground.  Not much tolerance to low temperatures.

Thunbergia of the Acanthaceae family, originally from Africa, India.  Usually grown indoors.  In cold winter areas, perennials are grown outdoors as annuals, in the ground or in pots, planting them in spring.  In pot, use a fibrous soil (with peat and other plant residues), rich in organic substance but a little acidic, not very fertile.  In open ground the soil must be well drained.  For indoor climbing species, keep the desired shape by pruning and applying metal wires or other supports.  In spring for all species, shorten the branches.

Very bright or in full sun, with slight shade in the hottest period, in positions sheltered from the winds.  The minimum winter temperature must not drop below 8-9" C; with temperatures indoors we intervene by ventilating and spraying the plant outdoors with shading.  Watering must be frequent and regular in spring-summer, then reducing the interventions in autumn-winter to keep the substratum just HUMID.  Repotting is done in spring using gradually larger pots.  Thunbergia are propagated by means of node cuttings in spring in a sheltered and heated place, with high humidity, planting tem when they are well rooted.  They are sown at the end of winter in a sheltered place, maintaining a temperature of 60-62 degrees F.  As soon as the plants are manageable, they are placed individually in a soil rich in organic substance, filtered with sand
