Onion Cipolla Rossa Lunga Di Firenze Long of Florence.  Mid-Early  Italian Heirloom  A long, narrow, eye-catching purple-red heirloom, are 4 to 5 in. torpedo shaped onions with a rich, but mild and sweet flavor.  Medium/long day type  Bulb of elongated shape, with sweet pulp and very rapid development; it is sown in spring and is harvested among the very first, for summer consumption. Excellent long day variety, suitable for all climates.  Traditionally grown in Italy & France, Rossa Lunga di Firenze is an intermediate day length onion, growing easily from seed to mature at midsummer in most areas. These adaptable and space-saving wine colored beauties offer great garden performance and their juicy, mild, crispy red flesh absolutely shines in salads and sandwiches, or when grilled to sweet succulence.

Before planting, thoroughly work compost or well-aged manure and bone meal into the soil. It is critical to weed onions carefully and mulch once soil warms up to conserve moisture. Side dress lightly several times during the growing season with a general purpose fertilizer; stop fertilizing during the last 2 months of growth.

Sowing and transplanting: at home or in seedbeds, transplanting the seedlings when they are 4-5 " high.  

Distances : between the rows 8-14". On the row 6-9"  Advice: when the leaves of the onions for winter consumption are yellowed, remove the bulb and let it dry on the ground in full sun for 5-7 days.  Store in a dry and ventilated place.

Growing onions in rows alongside parsley or celery helps keep the onion fly away.
